Sterilization with Ethylene Oxide (EtO) For PMMA Implants.
Heat-sensitive implants including PMMA and advanced composite materials require low-temperature sterilization methods. These implants will melt or deform under steam sterilization and must be processed using specialized techniques.
Ethylene Oxide (EtO)
Gas sterilization at low temperatures. This method requires extended aeration periods—typically 12-24 hours—to eliminate toxic gas residues before the implant is safe for handling. Widely used for heat-sensitive medical devices.
- Never attempt to sterilize these implants in a steam autoclave. High temperatures will cause irreversible damage including melting, warping, and structural failure. Only low-temperature methods are appropriate for these materials.
